As a woman, I've had a long love affair with the moon, and as my connection to my spirituality grew so did my interest in moon rituals. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a beginner, having the right tools can enhance the energy and intention of your ritual. Moon ritual tools can help you connect with the lunar energy and create a sacred space for your practice.
One of the most essential tools for any moon ritual is a moon phase calendar. This will help you plan your rituals according to the lunar cycle and align your intentions with the energy of the moon.
Once you have a time frame and date set, gather items that align with the Moon's energies and correspondences, and get your ritual moving forward. Let's go over what tools are needed and a little bit of historical background.

Historical Significance of Moon Worship
Rituals have been an integral part of human culture for centuries with many centered around the heavens. Many ancient civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, worshipped lunar and solar deities and performed rituals for various parts of their lives, including marriage, food, well-being, and fortunes.
In the ancient Babylonian culture, the moon god Sin (Suen) was worshipped for fertility and wisdom, and he was also the keeper of the cattle and dairy crops. Thoth, in Egyptian religion, was a god of the moon, of reckoning, of learning, and writing. He was held to be the inventor of writing, the creator of languages, the scribe, interpreter, and adviser of the gods, and the representative of the sun god, Re.
The moon has long been associated with feminine energy and has been revered as a symbol of fertility, intuition, and emotional balance. In many cultures, the full moon is considered a time of heightened energy and is often used for manifestation and release rituals.
Rituals were also used in ancient times to mark important events, such as the changing of seasons, harvests, and births. These rituals were often performed in groups and involved the use of various tools and symbols, such as highly decorated clay mugs, prayers written/inscribed on parchment papers and books, herbs, plants, animals, altars, musical instruments, and more.
Today, you will find rituals of many forms, including those devoted to honoring and harnessing the energies of the moon. The tools and symbols used in these rituals have evolved, but the underlying intention remains the same: to honor the moon and its power and to use that power to manifest positive change in one's life.

Incorporating Moon Correspondences
Before you go too deep into the moon ritual tools list, first understand what the Moon correspondences are within the astrological and magical realm.
The list below represents the various aspects and associations you can incorporate into any Moon-related ritual and altar. For example, you could use a silver altar cloth for your altar if you don't have a white one. You can also use a circular mirror to reflect the Moon's reflective qualities.
- Element: Water
- Color: Silver, white, pale blues and grays
- Metal: Silver, mirror
- Stones: Moonstones, pearls, opal, and selenite
- Animals: Crabs, shellfish, wolf, and cats
- Plants: Night-blooming, such as water lilies and moonflowers
- Lunar Deities, Gods, and Goddesses: Thoth, Sin, Diana, Selene (Greek), Luna (Roman), Tsukuyomi (Japanese), and many others
1. Moon Phase Calendar
First thing, pick a day and time that you want to do your moon ritual. Do you want to pick the time when the Moon returns to the same point as your birth chart? That would be a Lunar return for you. Or perhaps, you want to tackle the next time there's a New Moon in your 11th House. Either way, you need a moon phase calendar, and determine what your goals are.
2. An Altar Cloth
An altar cloth is a piece of fabric that covers your altar. It serves as a foundation for your ritual tools and creates a sacred space. Choose a cloth that resonates with you and the lunar energy. You can use a plain white cloth or a cloth with lunar symbols, such as the moon phases or the triple moon goddess. My favorite altar cloths have all come from second-hand shops. Don't overthink this.
Don't worry too much if you can't find an altar cloth, just create a surface with what you have in hand.
3. Candles and Holders
Candles are an essential part of all rituals. They represent the element of fire and provide light and energy. Choose candles in colors that correspond to your intention, such as white for purification, pink for healing, or silver for intuition. You also need candle holders to keep your candles steady and safe.
4. Add Crystals for Lunar Energy
Crystals are powerful tools for harnessing lunar energy. They can amplify your intentions and help you connect with the moon's energy.
Choose crystals that correspond to the moon phase or your intention, such as moonstone for new beginnings, selenite for clarity, or labradorite for transformation.
Consider crystals for your zodiac sign, or stick to crystals for new moon rituals and intentions.
Seek out alternatives to popular crystal subscription boxes, and design your own.
5. Use Incense and Burners
Incense is a multipurpose tool that can help you create a peaceful and calming atmosphere. It represents the element of air and can help you purify your space. Choose incense in scents that correspond to your intention, such as lavender for relaxation, frankincense for spiritual connection, or sandalwood for grounding. You also need an incense burner to hold your incense safely.
I like to use Sphere + Sundry powders for my incense.
6. Try Out Moon Bath Teas
Moon events are perfect moments to do your DIY moon bath recipe project, as well as, to indulge in your favorite moon bath tea. Start with one and end with the other.
A ritual bath is a perfect way to start your larger lunar ritual. Think about starting with a ritual bath to cleanse your body and your energetic field before doing a more complex ritual.
7. Add Anointing Oils to Your Body or Objects
If you're going to go through the effort of putting together a ritual, try to include a special anointing oil that amplifies and supports your desired goals and intentions. Is this ritual for current life goals or aspects of your birth chart (planets, signs)?
Or do you want to build a stronger connection with your favorite lunar deity? Or perhaps you want to stick to herbs and plants for your anointing oils?
Try to keep your selection to 1-2 oils. Less is more. Anoint objects to feed with lunar energy, or anoint the body to amplify and support your goals. If putting on your skin, use a carrier oil as most oils are highly concentrated and need a barrier.
8. Set a Cup or Small Vase
You need a container to hold water or another liquid of your choice. If you're making moon water, a container that can be sealed is required. I like glass jars with lids. I write the date and time with a Sharpie whenever I'm storing moon water for later use.
Use water and this vessel as an offering during your ritual.
9. Decorate with Flowers
This is where things can be so beautiful and fun! If the budget allows, or you have a connection to a beautiful field of flowers, grab what calls your name. If you want to stay with the Moon theme, use white-colored flowers like moonflowers, or other night-blooming flowers.
Use flowers to decorate your altar, make a crown, store in your moon water, or gift to your chosen lunar deities.
10. Clear Energy with Musical Instruments
One of my favorite ways to clear a space of still and stuck energy is to use my Remo hand drum, handmade rattles, or bells. If none are nearby, clap your hands!
11. Don't Forget Your Favorite Journal
Whether it's a digital or a physical journal, do try to write down your spiritual goals, work on journaling prompts, and explore your spiritual and astrology path during your next moon ritual.

12. Grab Your Oracle and Tarot Decks
Grab your favorite Moon-themed oracle deck, or stick to a classic Tarot structure for an insightful moon ritual reading. You can also add the Moon tarot card, or any other cards that are lunar or lunar deity in nature, to your altar and ceremonial space.
13. Add A Lunar Themed Object or Favorite Keepsake
This is when you need to let your imagination go and not limit yourself to normal associations. Do you have a statue of a lunar goddess or god? How about a silver circular mirror? Or perhaps you have a beautiful small cat drawing that you want to include on the altar? Do you have a moon sticker?
Look over the moon correspondences list from above, and brainstorm a few trinkets you can add to your altar.
And that's it, use this essential moon ritual tools list to identify your ideal setup and adapt to your needs and situation. Some days and evenings you won't have much of this, and other times, you will be over-prepared.
Bonus Item! Add flower essence sprays to your ritual to help support your healing journey.
Moon Phase Correspondences
Moon phases play a significant role in moon rituals, and it's essential to understand the energy and symbolism associated with each phase. Here are the correspondences for the two most important moon phases for manifesting:
New Moon Rituals
The new moon represents new beginnings, fresh starts, and setting intentions. This phase is perfect for manifesting, setting goals, and planting seeds for the future. For your next new moon ritual, give these tools a try:
- Black candles: Black candles are excellent for banishing negative energy and releasing old patterns that no longer serve you.
- Clear quartz crystal: Clear quartz is a powerful crystal that amplifies your intentions and helps you manifest your desires.
- New Moon affirmations: While not a physical tool, this positive affirmation practice can dramatically change your ritual practices.
- Journal: Writing down your intentions and goals helps you clarify your thoughts and set clear intentions. Use your journal to keep track of your progress.
Full Moon Rituals
The full moon represents completion, manifestation, and celebrating your achievements. This phase is ideal for releasing what no longer serves you and letting go of anything that's holding you back. Incorporate these moon ritual tools into your next ritual for deep cleansing and release:
- White candles: White candles represent purity, clarity, and spiritual enlightenment. They're perfect for releasing negative energy and bringing in positive vibes.
- Selenite crystal: Selenite is a powerful crystal that cleanses and purifies your energy field. It's perfect for releasing negative energy and promoting spiritual growth.
- Bowl of water: A bowl of water represents the element of water, which is associated with emotions and intuition. Use it to release any emotional baggage and promote healing.
Remember, these are just suggestions, and you can use any tools that resonate with you during your moon rituals. The most important thing is to set clear intentions, focus your energy, and trust the process.
Ritual Preparation and Practice
Setting Intentions
Before beginning any moon ritual, it's important to set your intentions. This involves taking some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve through the ritual. You may want to write down your intentions in a journal or on a piece of paper that you can refer to during the ritual. Setting intentions can help you focus your energy and give your ritual a sense of purpose.
Ritual Steps and Chants
Once you have set your intentions, you can begin your moon ritual. There are many different steps and chants that you can incorporate into your ritual, depending on your personal preferences and the type of ritual you are performing. Here are a few examples:
- Cleansing: Many moon rituals begin with a cleansing step, such as burning herbs, incense, or lighting candles. This can help clear negative energy and create a sacred space for your ritual.
- Meditation: Taking a few minutes to meditate can help you connect with your inner self and prepare for the ritual ahead.
- Invocation: You may want to call upon the moon goddess or other spiritual beings to guide and protect you during the ritual.
- Offering: Some moon rituals involve making an offering, such as a piece of jewelry or a flower, to the moon goddess as a symbol of gratitude.
- Chanting: Chanting can help you focus your energy and raise your vibrations. You may want to repeat a specific chant or mantra throughout the ritual to help increase and drive energy towards your intentions.
