Remember when we last met to discuss Virgo's connection to Astraea? Well, here we go again, talking about another feminine energy—this time in the yang sign of Libra.

To truly understand the Libra zodiac sign archetype, we need to explore its connection to Venus, delve into the myths surrounding it, and examine a few modern examples of this beautiful and social air sign.

Let's start with the Libra constellation and mythology first.

Libra Constellation and Mythology

Libra season dates, constellation diagram and scales

The great ancient myths and stories of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese share many common themes, including a love for the arts and the desire to spread beauty throughout society—qualities and interests that are quintessentially Libra.

Since the beginning of time, humans have woven tales of love, art, beauty, and justice. These themes are evident in myths and the history of art across the world.

Libra, as an archetype, offers a lens through which to understand these universal stories and the world around us, beyond merely defining one's identity.

Before astrology, what did we know of Libra?

1. The Scales Constellation

Libra, one of the 12 constellations of the zodiac, represents the scales of justice and lies between Virgo to the west and Scorpius to the east.

Libra—Latin for “weighing scales”—is the only zodiac constellation named after an inanimate object rather than a character or animal. Often associated with Astraea or Dike's scales of justice, it has also been historically referred to as the Claws of Scorpius.

2. Greek Mythology

Libra is often associated with Themis, the Greek goddess of justice, or with Astraea, the virgin goddess who carried the scales of justice.

In Greek mythology and religion, Themis, was one of the twelve Titan offspring of Gaia and Uranus, and was linked with oracles and prophecies, notably the Oracle of Delphi. Her symbol is the Scales of Justice.

3. Seventh Sign of The Zodiac

Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac. In Pythagorean numerology, the number 7 consists of the union of the physical (number 4) with the spiritual (number 3), meaning spirituality.

There are 7 planets in classical astrology. Each Saturn square is about 7 years long, hence the term the 7-year itch. 😏

There are 7 days in a week, 7 colors in a rainbow, and 7 is everybody's favorite number.

4. Libra's Season: September 23 – October 22

Libra begins when the Sun shifts from Virgo to Libra around September 23, with the season-ending around October 22. In the Northern Hemisphere, this represents the beginning of the fall season.

In Virgo, the focus is on harvesting; in Libra, the season shifts to balance and harmony.

5. The Scales

The Libra symbol, glyph is known as The Scales ⚖️, or known in charts as this: ♎

6. An Air Element Sign

After the Earth element, we move into the Air element. This transition is seen 3 times throughout the zodiac wheel journey: Taurus to Gemini, Virgo to Libra, and Capricorn to Aquarius.

As an air element sign, Libra represents intellect, communication, and social connections.

7. Libra's Modality: Cardinal

As a cardinal sign, Libra is initiatory and action-oriented, embodying the start of the autumn season.

This modality brings a proactive approach to creating balance and harmony in relationships and social interactions.

8. Ruled by Venus

Venus rules two signs: Taurus and Libra, representing the yin and yang expressions of the Venusian archetype.

As a Venusian sign, Libra is associated with beauty, harmony, balance, and a strong appreciation for art and relationships.

9. Libra Keywords

When describing Libra, the keywords that stand out the most are diplomatic, charming, sociable, fair-minded, idealistic, peace-loving, balanced, artistic, gracious, and cooperative.

10. Famous Libra Personalities

To get a sense of how a Sun in Libra could be expressed, I gathered a few famous personalities and a quote for each. Let's see how each of these individuals carried the scales of justice in their lives.

Mahatma Gandhi (October 2), a Libra, is known as one of the greatest justice leaders of the 20th century. This quote below couldn't be more Libra'esque. Can you see the image of extracting evil with evil?

An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.

― Mahatma Gandhi

Another amazing Libra is John Lennon (October 9), who was an English musician, singer and songwriter famed for his founding member status of the Beatles.

Libra, with its connection to Venus, can be seen here as a peace-loving artist seeking to be a diplomat via his music.

All you need is love.

Oscar Wilde born on October 16, 1854, was an Irish writer and poet. Today, he is remembered for his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, a story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty.

Here we see Libra's connection to beauty via Venus, and perhaps a not-so-helpful expression if you're selling your soul for vain endeavors.

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

11. Hobbies and Interests

Let's paint a picture or photo of a typical Libra hobby or interest in life… you love parties, gatherings and socializing with your network of friends. Even better if your social engagement involves walking through an art gallery and checking out the latest exhibit.

As an Air sign, Libra enjoys not only the relating part of things, but also the mental realm of sharing and exploring ideas.

12. Career Paths

For strong Libra chart placements, such as the Sun, you may find individuals pursuing diplomatic roles such as being a diplomat, mediator or lawyer. Or perhaps they tap into their creative nature and explore being an artist, musician, fashion designer, or interior decorator.

Libra is also known as the Zodiac's relation-oriented sign, making it a perfect publicist, event planner or spokesperson.

13. Zodiac Compatibility

When I teach astrology, I focus on showing how different elements connect and correspond to each other. This approach helps you build a clear framework and structure, making it easier to understand how astrology works in real life.

In my recent post about zodiac signs meanings, I explained that signs forming a trine are generally more compatible with each other. With this in mind, the signs that form an air trine are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, which indeed tend to have a high degree of compatibility.

So, if signs share an element and are compatible with each other, what happens with signs sharing a modality? They form a square aspect with each other. Libra is a cardinal sign, and makes a square to Cancer and Capricorn, making those two signs challenging matches.

14. Favorite Colors and Stones

Honestly, Libra colors are every young girl's dream bedroom palette, with pinks and light blues taking centerstage. Think all pastel like.

With those colors in mind, something like Opal stands out as an ideal Libra birthstone.

I also like to use Rose Quartz for Libra, or Lapis Lazuli to help with indecision by providing clarity and wisdom.

Libra Gifts, Traits and Challenges

Now we get into the more personal, and personality based world, where you can apply the Libra archetype to a person's natal chart and interpret their Libra characteristics.

Let's assume this is your Libra nature, take what resonates and leave the rest behind:

15. Libra's Love for Harmony

As a Libra you often strive for balance and harmony in all aspects of life, seeking to create peace and avoid conflict.

You are natural mediator, always looking for fair solutions and fostering cooperative environments. This intrinsic desire for equilibrium makes you adept at navigating social situations and maintaining harmonious relationships.

16. Appreciation of Beauty

With Venus as your ruler, you have a keen eye for beauty and aesthetics, often drawn to art, design, and beautiful surroundings.

Use this energy to fuel your creative nature, and allow expression to occur whether that's by creating or witnessing someone create works of art.

17. Social Butterflies

As a Libra, you are known for your charm and sociability, making you a great friend and excellent host.

Your ability to connect with others and create a welcoming atmosphere is unmatched. This natural charisma helps you build strong, meaningful relationships and effortlessly bring people together.

18. Justice Seekers

The symbol of the scales reflects in your Libra innate sense of justice and fairness. You are often an advocate for equality and fairness in your personal and professional life.

Your strong moral compass guides you to stand up for what is right, and you are dedicated to creating balanced and just environments.

19. Indecisiveness

You struggle to make decisions due to your desire to weigh all options and perspectives.

Sometimes this results in making no decision whatsoever, not realizing that inaction is a decision.

20. People-Pleasing

You have a tendency to prioritize others' needs over your own, leading to potential burnout or resentment.

While your selflessness and desire to maintain harmony are admirable, it's important to remember to take care of yourself as well. Balancing your own needs with those of others can help prevent feelings of exhaustion and ensure you maintain healthy, fulfilling relationships.

Learning to be assertive (Aries), practicing self-care, and setting boundaries is crucial for sustaining your well-being and happiness.
