Most people only know their star sign, aka Sun sign, you know the zodiac sign based on your birth month. Most people don't know that all 12 zodiac signs are represented in your life, aka your natal chart. You have the 12 zodiac energies and traits within you, which is amazing, and yet daunting when wanting to learn the zodiac sign meanings.
How does one learn and memorize the zodiac wheel? You start by understanding the system.

Zodiac Basics
Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let's first clarify and make clear what type of Zodiac we're discussing today. I'm teaching you the basics of Western Astrology with a Hellenistic/traditional perspective.
In other words, I don't cover Vedic, Mayan or Chinese astrology. Perhaps in the future, for now, let's focus on the meaning of the Western Astrology Zodiac signs.
To learn the zodiac signs, you must memorize several concepts, but trust me, as time goes on, these zodiac basics will become second nature to you:
- The zodiac wheel is comprised of 12 signs, with each sign representing an element and modality combination. Each sign occupies 30 degrees of the 360-degree circle.
- There are 4 elements and 3 modalities, and each of these categories forms the basics for understanding and memorizing the Zodiac Wheel.
- Each Zodiac Sign has its season dates, traits, and personality profile, along with corresponding herbs, stones, and animals.
Understanding the foundational principles of the zodiac is essential when exploring your options for how to learn astrology, as it provides the framework for interpreting celestial influences on human behavior.

Learning The Basics of Astrology
Elements
Let's start with the core foundation of the Zodiac, elements. There are 4 elements: fire, earth, air, and water, and that's how they're arranged within the zodiac wheel. Aries (fire), the first zodiac sign, is followed by Taurus (earth), then Gemini (air), and then Cancer (water). These four represent the first four signs of the zodiac and are also the first sign for each element.
Let's break it down by element:
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — Fire signs are energetic, passionate, and enthusiastic. You are known for your boldness, creativity, and dynamic nature.
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn — Earth signs are practical, grounded, and reliable. You value stability, hard work, and tangible results.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius — Air signs are intellectual, communicative, and social. You are known for your curiosity, adaptability, and love for ideas and concepts.
Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — Water signs are emotional, intuitive, and nurturing. You are deeply connected to your feelings and often have a strong sense of empathy and compassion.
Trine Aspect
Grouping the signs by element (fire, earth, air, and water signs) also shows another way to remember the signs. Each element represents a grouping of signs that are in a Trine Aspect with each other. A trine aspect is defined as points that are 120 degrees apart.
Trines are considered harmonious and supportive aspects, indicating ease and flow of energy between the signs.
Signs within an element essentially get along, they have the same type of vibe.
You're invited! Let's continue the conversation…
Modalities
The modalities (also known as qualities) describe the way in which the zodiac signs express their energy and interact with the world.
There are 3 modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Each modality contains four zodiac signs, one from each element (Fire, Earth, Air, and Water), and they indicate how signs approach life, initiate actions, and respond to changes.
Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn – Cardinal signs are the starters and pioneers of the zodiac. You are known for your ability to take action and drive progress.
Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius – Fixed signs are the preservers of the zodiac. You are known for your reliability, determination, and ability to maintain and develop what has already been started.
Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces – Mutable signs are the changers and communicators of the zodiac. You are known for your versatility, open-mindedness, and ability to go with the flow.
Square Aspect
Modalities are a great way to understand Squares. As soon as you hear that there's a concentration of planets in a fixed sign (or any modality), you can reasonably consider that a Square aspect is forming or has formed.
Why? Cause signs within one modality form a Square Aspect with each other.
A square is an aspect that occurs when two planets or points are approximately 90 degrees apart on the zodiac wheel. This aspect is considered challenging and dynamic, as it creates tension and friction between the energies of the involved planets.
However, this tension can also drive growth, change, and action.
Zodiac Pairs
Next up is the opposition, aka Zodiac Pairs. Zodiac Pairs refer to the relationships between signs that are directly opposite each other on the zodiac wheel.
Oppositions
These pairs are known as polarities or oppositions and they consist of complementary qualities and traits. While they can create tension due to their differences, they also offer opportunities for balance and growth.
There are 6 Zodiac Pairs, and each sign is 6 signs away from its pair, aka 180 degrees apart.
Aries/Libra: Aries brings courage and initiative, while Libra provides cooperation and balance in relationships.
Taurus/Scorpio: Taurus offers stability and consistency, while Scorpio brings depth and transformative power.
Gemini/Sagittarius: Gemini's versatility and communication skills complement Sagittarius's broad vision and quest for knowledge.
Cancer/Capricorn: Cancer's nurturing qualities balance Capricorn's practical and goal-oriented approach.
Leo/Aquarius: Leo's individuality and charisma complement Aquarius's collective and forward-thinking mindset.
Virgo/Pisces: Virgo's practicality and attention to detail balance Pisces's emotional sensitivity and intuition.
Zodiac Sign Symbolism
Astrological glyphs are symbolic representations used to denote the zodiac signs, each capturing the core essence and characteristics of the sign it represents.
These glyphs provide a visual shorthand for understanding the traits, behaviors, and energies associated with each sign, making them a crucial tool for your astrology learning toolbox.
Tip: Using zodiac sign study cards can also help you memorize the system, along with navigating life's ins and outs.

Zodiac Signs in Modern Design and Life
Let's cover everybody's favorite topic, how can I get a zodiac sign tattoo design? No?
Seriously, ask a Scorpio out there, and I bet they have a Scorpion or other Scorpio symbol on their skin. It's wild! (ask my mate 😄)
If you're going to add such a talisman to your body, think long and hard about which symbols you would like to ink on your body. You can be more liberal with non-body items since you know they're not permanent, per se.
Incorporating your zodiac profile into your life can be as easy as wearing zodiac jewelry, and accessories, and adding zodiac-inspired art and decor items to your home.
Think about your Sun sign for empowering yourself, your Venus sign to strengthen your connection to harmony with others and self, each planet sign combo has meaning. And each Zodiac sign has its own meaning on its own.
Your options are endless.

Zodiac Sign Meanings & Personalities
The 12 signs of the zodiac wheel are beautiful celestial symbols representing the birth, death, and rebirth process found in all birth charts. As you journey from Aries to Pisces, you explore different energies that shape your personality and life challenges.
Each sign has its own meaningful symbolism and themes, guiding you to understand your unique astrological makeup better. From the bold pioneer spirit of Aries to the spiritual mystic of Pisces, the signs illuminate core parts of your self and soul's growth.
Each sign exists in a different house (whole sign house system), giving each house one core theme and focus. For example, if you know oppositions, you know that Aries and Libra go together. And if you're a Pisces Rising, then your 1H is Pisces, with Aries as your 2nd house, and Libra as your 8th.
Now, let's cover each sign as a personality:
Aries (♈ March 21 – April 19)
Aries, as the first fire sign of the Zodiac, is the embodiment of wild courage. You are the Trailblazer.
Bold and adventurous, Aries is always first in line for new experiences. You are courageous leaders, driven by passion and a zest for life.
With boundless energy, you charge ahead, inspiring others to follow.
Taurus (♉ April 20-May 20)
When I think of Taurus, I think of a Bull eating grass in a field, day after day. Same thing each day, and super happy about it. Or at least, thinks it is. That's Taurus, the picture of stability, patience, and sensuality.
You are the Builder. Steadfast and reliable, Taurus values stability and comfort. You have a knack for creating beauty and enjoy life’s luxuries.
Loyal and patient, you are a friend others can always count on, providing a solid foundation in any storm.
Gemini (♊ May 21-June 20)
Gemini is the forever kid in the crowd, with a glint in their eyes. The first Air sign of the Zodiac wheel, Gemini, is full of speed with lots of things to share. Ruled by Mercury, this sign loves to explore the communication realm. You are the Communicator.
Curious and quick-witted, Gemini thrives on variety and intellectual stimulation. You are a social butterfly, effortlessly engaging in conversations and making connections.
Your adaptable nature keeps life exciting and ever-changing.
Cancer (♋ June 21-July 22)
If you're lucky, you may experience a Moon in Cancer or Sun in Cancer individual that helps you soothe your latest bump in life. Or, this is you, the Zodiac Nurturer.
As a nurturing Cancer, you possess a tender heart and profound empathy, intimately attuned to the emotional currents flowing within yourself and those around you.
You create a warm, nurturing environment, always ready to offer a shoulder to cry on. Home and family are your sanctuary.
Leo (♌ July 23-August 22)
I have several Leo friends, each a true gem radiating magnificence and regality. One striking quality you notice is their upright stance, ever poised to receive love and admiration – justly so, for as a Leo, you are a regal performer at your core.
Charismatic and self-assured, you thrive as the dazzling center of attention. A natural-born leader with an innate flair for drama and creativity, your generous and sunny disposition makes you beloved by all, drawing others effortlessly into your warm orbit.
You embody the very essence of The Performer's spirit.
Virgo (♍ August 23-September 22)
Virgo is one of the few signs associated with a person in its symbolism. If you don't see the Virgo glyph ♍, then you're likely being shown an image of a young maiden carrying a sheaf of wheat.
Virgo's roots lie in virgin/feminine symbolism from mythology, language origins, and elemental/planetary rulerships. Why do I mention this? Because these details can help you understand the archetype of Virgo, The Perfectionist.
Detail-oriented and analytical, you as a Virgo excel at organizing and improving systems. You are practical and reliable, always striving for excellence in your endeavors. Your thoughtful, discerning nature makes you an invaluable friend and adept problem-solver.
Efficiency and precision are priorities as you apply your meticulous eye to refine and perfect your circumstances.

Whether through creative pursuits or cultivating beauty in your personal spaces, you endeavor to bring harmony to your inner and outer worlds.
Scorpio (♏ October 23-November 21)
Scorpio, while often misunderstood as the most intense energy, let's redefine intensity. Aries carries an outward, fiery intensity, but yours is a deep, smoldering passion that consumes you from within – an obsession for your latest fascination, be it a passion project or person.
You are the Investigator. Intense yet mysterious, you as a Scorpio possess an unquenchable thirst to delve into life's hidden depths and unravel its mysteries.
Your passions burn with inexhaustible intensity, driving you to pursue your interests with a radically committed, all-or-nothing approach.
Resourceful and determined, you refuse to settle for surface-level understanding.
This very quality that renders you enigmatic also instills an unwavering sense of loyalty. For those you hold dear, your protective devotion knows no bounds. You nurture profound bonds, fiercely shielding your loved ones from harm.
In your uncompromising pursuit of truth and intimacy, you transform every encounter into an intense exploration of the metaphysical and emotional realms.

Tips for Zodiac Sign Horoscopes
Horoscopes are the first thing that most people know about astrology. Reading the weekly horoscope in a newspaper or magazine has been a long-time tradition for your average US consumer.
And what is a horoscope? Horoscopes are astrological forecasts based on the positions and movements of celestial bodies, such as the Sun, Moon, and planets, at a specific time.
When horoscopes are listed by zodiac sign, the astrologer casts a chart with that Sign's position in the first house, and then gives you an interpretation of each planetary's position in the chart.
Let's say you're a Sun in Cancer with a Pisces Rising.
Reading a Pisces Sign horoscope would place your Sun in the 5th House, vs a Cancer Sign Horoscope, which would have your Sun in Cancer in the 1st House.
That's a big difference.
Most people pay attention to their Sun sign when consulting a horoscope, and ignore the rest. I recommend reading or listening to horoscopes for your Rising sign first, followed by your Sun or Moon sign.
Why? Unless you have paid for a personalized horoscope service, then what you're reading is general and not specific to your chart.
Following along for your Rising Sign, at least giving you a perspective of which life areas, aka Houses, are impacted by that horoscope reading.
Daily, Weekly, Monthly vs. Yearly Horoscopes
I believe that most horoscope readings are overkill. Sometimes, not keeping up with the stars can give your mind time to integrate, reflect, and then act.
So, what horoscopes should you pay attention to? Think about these prompts:
- I don't know what to do today, how should my energy be best utilized?
- Do I need to plan for a project?
- Is there an upcoming event that could utilize some astrological guidance?
- I'm navigating a tough time right now, what's the message I need at this time?
- I'm in a new relationship, what's the potential?
- I'm looking to build a business, what support can I harness for my ideas?
This is just a short list to ask yourself to determine what sort of horoscope to review. If it's immediate, then yes, do a daily. Just know that daily won't give you a big picture.
Daily Horoscopes
A daily horoscope covers the transits for that day, based on one specific time. Daily horoscopes are great for immediate insights into daily challenges, opportunities, and moods.
Use daily horoscopes for:
- Short-Term Decisions: When you need advice on everyday activities, minor decisions, or quick reflections on how the day's planetary influences might affect you.
- Routine Planning: Ideal for planning your day, such as knowing when to focus on work, socializing, or self-care.
Weekly Horoscopes
Weekly horoscopes are just that, a week's view of planetary transits for each Zodiac sign. Use weekly horoscopes to get a sense of the themes and energies that will influence the entire week.
Use weekly horoscopes for:
- Planning and Scheduling: Helpful for organizing your week, setting priorities, and preparing for upcoming events or projects.
- Managing Goals: Useful for tracking progress on short-term goals and understanding how to navigate weekly challenges.
Monthly Horoscopes
I bet you're seeing a theme now… Monthly horoscopes cover that month's planetary transits. Now we're talking about significant trends and key periods for certain types of activities. You need the monthly view to get to the weekly and daily. You know?
So, for monthly horoscopes, use them for:
- Personal Development: To focus on areas of growth, relationships, career advancements, and major life changes that may unfold over the month.
- Goal Setting: Ideal for setting and revisiting monthly goals, projects, and intentions.
Yearly Horoscopes
One of my favorite ways to look at astrology is quarterly, and then yearly. Yearly gives you the eagle's eye view. You can see the mileposts, and just need the plays to move forward.
Win your goals with yearly forecasts:
- Big Picture Insights: To understand major themes, trends, and transitions that will shape your entire year.
- Life Planning: Useful for long-term planning, such as setting yearly goals, making major life decisions, or preparing for significant changes.
- Personal Growth: Provides an overview of potential growth areas, opportunities, and challenges throughout the year, helping you to align your actions with the year's astrological influences.
Zodiac Sign Compatibility
Once you have a strong grasp of the Zodiac Wheel and its mechanics, you'll quickly understand which zodiac signs are compatible or in tension with each other.
I also know you may want an easy button for figuring out who you can vibe with, but as you know, each natal chart is unique. Yes, you'll find birth chart twins, but finding someone with your experience is a harder challenge. Your home life, neighborhood, country, etc are also critical in shaping who you are and become.
So, based on what you just learned, which signs do you believe are harmonious with each other? Which signs are more likely to create tension between them?
Refer back to elements, modalities, and the Zodiac pairs for insight. Use those Zodiac basics to help you answer the key compatibility questions we all have in life: love, zodiac sign partners, friendship, and business.
Take my free birth chart workbook, and analyze your planetary placements:
- for each element, list which planet is in that element. Ex: Venus in Taurus, is an Earth planet. Mercury in Aries is a Fire planet. Include your Rising sign as part of this exercise.
- for each modality, list each planet that has that modality. Group your planets and Rising sign by modality: cardinal, fixed, and mutable.
That's a good start. Now add up the number of planets and Rising sign represented in each element and modality bucket.
What does your chart say about your elemental and modality profile?
If you have lots of Air in your chart, what sorts of partners would you vibe with? Go back to the basics and you'll find lots of answers.
