Instead of getting lost in planetary overload, use your natal chart as a tool for reflection: notice how your Sun, Moon, and Rising respond to what you're feeling today.

Focus on one area of life (a house), find the loudest planet, and explore how different parts of you are interacting.

In this post, I’ll walk you through a simple, beginner-friendly method to read your chart in a way that actually helps you understand yourself not just your astrology.

1. Start With a Real Question, Not the Whole Birth Chart

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to interpret everything at once. It’s like trying to read an entire book by glancing at every page simultaneously, super overwhelming and ultimately unhelpful.

Instead, begin with something that sparks your intuitive skills, and helps you to connect with your inner dialogue and self… so ask yourself:

  • Why am I feeling so reactive lately?
  • What’s been draining my energy?
  • What part of me needs more attention?

Tap into your inner voice to help guide your birth chart inquiry, instead of staring at a circle with lines, and hoping an answer jumps out immediate.

You could also use your pendulum to ask questions, and help you pinpoint sections in your chart that need help, and some TLC.

2. Meet Your Core Self: Sun, Moon, and Rising

Think of these three as your internal GPS. The core parts within that makes you, you.

Your Big Three (Sun, Moon and Rising Signs) always have something to say, and sometimes, more than we give it time to express.

  • Your Sun Sign = Your core energy, vitality, life-force
  • Your Moon Sign = Your emotional world, comfort zone, inner landscape
  • Your Rising Sign = The mask you wear and how you meet the world

👉 Ask: Which of these signs feels most active — or most off — in me right now?

Try this activity: Write a journal-style note from each of these three parts of you. What would your Sun say today? Your Moon? Your Rising? Give them a voice.

3. Choose a House: Where Is the Story Unfolding?

Your birth chart is like a home with 12 different rooms, and each room represents an area of life. Relationships, money, career, creativity, health, etc.

Ask: Where in my life am I feeling the most tension or curiosity right now?

Once you know the “room,” look at what’s happening there:

  • Which house does that area fall into?
  • Are any planets currently “living” there? (could be natal or by transit)

That house is where your current growth or lesson is playing out. Explore the symbols and keywords for that astrological house, and then give yourself the homework of layering the zodiac sign meaning for that house.

Just keep in mind, there's no right or wrong keyword or meaning. Just write it down, and keep learning.

4. Listen to the Loudest Planet

Every chart has a planet that’s practically yelling for attention. You’ll know it because:

  • It forms a lot of aspects to other parts in your chart
  • or, it sits right on an angle (like the Ascendant)
  • or perhaps… You feel emotionally drawn to it, again and again

Imagine that planet as a character. What is it trying to say? What part of your evolution is it pushing forward?

💡 For example: If Mars is active and agitated, maybe you’re learning to reclaim your anger or assert your needs more clearly.

5. Spot an Inner Conversation (Aspects Made Simple)

Aspects are conversations between different parts of your chart and therefore, your psyche.

Start small when exploring aspects… don't do all at once!:

  • Feeling torn or pulled in two directions? That’s likely a Square.
  • Noticing easy, harmonious patterns? That’s a Trine.
  • Tension that’s been building but also motivating? That could be an Opposition.

👉 Don’t try to analyze every astrological aspect meaning. Just pick one. Reflect on how those two parts of you are speaking — or arguing — with each other.

6. Integrate the Insight: Write a Personal Statement

Once you’ve journaled, explored, and imagined, pause.

Ask: What am I learning about myself right now?

Then write a personal insight, like:

“I’m learning to let go of needing control in relationships (Venus in Scorpio, 7th House).”

“My Leo Moon wants to be seen, but my Capricorn Rising hides that part of me.”

This simple practice turns your chart into a living, breathing dialogue, one you can return to again and again.

Your Next Steps For… How to Read Birth Chart for Self-Awareness

Astrology isn’t here to define you, or box you in. It’s here to help you see yourself more clearly, so you can live more intentionally.

Each part of your chart is a voice. And when you learn to listen with compassion, you stop feeling boxed in by astrology, and start being empowered by it.

–> Try this: Sit with one real-life question each week. Then open your chart and use it as a journaling prompt. See what insights emerge when you treat your chart like a wise friend.
