Why Use an Astrology Journal?

If you're serious about learning astrology, and applying it's wisdom to your life, then you must start building yourself some sort of paper trail, and the good kind.

One of the things my Unveiled Path Circle members get each month is a journal laying out that season's themes, journal prompts, affirmation, rituals and activities. It's structured to help the newbie learn astrology via a themed and tangible tool…. paper.

Maintaining an astrology journal offers many benefits, but most importantly, it's the one thing you can do for yourself that will help you track your progress in a very tangible way.

With an astrology journal, you can:

  • Track moon phases, transits, and your personal growth goals
  • Reflect on your own tarot/oracle, astrology readings, and synchronicities
  • Align your intentions with cosmic timing by scheduling your plans, and tracking your progress

How to Choose the Right Astrology Journal

First, the market for astrology journals is mainly focused on printed formats, vs a digital journal. I'm focused on the paper route as that's my favorite medium for pretty much anything planner/learning related.

So, how do you choose the right astrology journal? Well, when I was in the market for one, I went for lunar and Indie made. And then, like most things, I decided to DIY my own journal.

If that's not you and you would rather get something that's pre-made and ready to use, here's what to consider and how I would prioritize the journal options:

  • What's the paper quality? The higher the GSM, the heavier and thicker the paper will be…. do you want thick paper, or really thin? Most stuff coming from Amazon is not high-quality paper.
  • What's the layout? Is it an astrology journal with planner aspects, or more of a planner? What are you needing? Do you want to journal, and plan separately, or try to combine the two?
  • Dated vs undated? Are you seeking to do daily entries where you write in the date, or do you want your journal and planner to be dated for that month, year?
  • What's the focus of this product (moon, full chart, daily entries, etc.)? Does the Moon's cycles appeal to you, or do you want to also explore your full chart? Do you want to do daily astrology entries where you're tracking your astrology?
  • Educational? Are you a beginner? Do you need educational material in your journal/planner?
  • Aesthetic? What's the look you're after? Mystical or Witchy?
  • Size? Do you want small or very large format?
  • Portability? Do you want to carry it in your bag with you?
  • Indie made? Mass produced? Are you trying to support the small biz, or the larger markets?
  • Cost? Do you have a budget at this time?

That's a lot to think about right? Here's how I would prioritize all of that, and make a decision as an astrology beginner:

  1. Start with the least costly version, and decide if you even like to do astrology journaling
  2. Yes, pick something that educates you
  3. Focused on one thing only: Moon or That Day's Vibe Check In

Based on that, I'd say look at We'Moon or the Astrology Self-Care Journal, and of course my free daily astrology planner to get you started.

Tips for Getting the Most from Your Astrology Journal

When you're just starting out with astrology journaling, always try to keep it simple. I know you'll be tempted to learn your full birth chart at once, and want to play with the Moon's cycles.

But trust me…baby steps, so you can step by step build a practice that's sustainable and insightful for you.

Here's a few tips for getting the most out of your astrology journaling experience:

  • Quickly figure out if you want to do daily vs weekly entries in your journal. When doing daily entries you'll be tracking the Moon's shift from one zodiac sign to the other, and eventually it's transits to the Sun, aka moon phases. If your journal is undated, or missing moon transit dates then you'll need to use a separate source to tell you what's happening in the stars. The Time Nomad or Deluxe Moon apps are my reco.
  • Add a ritual practice to your astrology journaling – make it extra special. Say during the next New Moon, light a candle, and journal about that New Moon's transit in your chart. Write out what you're letting go. Sing, dance, chant, do something to shift your energy and step into your new intention. Burn that list. You know that sort of new moon ritual.
  • Set a journaling goal. Are you wanting to this daily for the next 30 days? Whatever goal it is, say it, and write it down! and of course, try to stick to your goal.
  • I mentioned Time Nomad and Deluxe Moon as the perfect apps to track the current planetary weather. Your planner should hold all of your thoughts, wishes, reflections, changes, etc… and let the app tell you where the Moon or Mercury is right now. Shift your focus from app, to the journal for insights and growth.
