Setting Up Your Astrology Journal

In journaling, having the right supplies can make a big impact, especially if you want to get creative.

This guide focuses on printed journals, not digital astrology journals (we'll get to those later).

The goal is to engage your fine motor skills for better learning and memory by using pens, markers, writing, and drawing to craft your perfect astrology journal.

Choosing Your Journal

Choosing the right journal is crucial. Opt for a notebook with quality paper that can handle ink, stickers, and other decorations without bleeding through. Personalize your journal by decorating it with astrology-themed elements like zodiac symbols, constellations, and moon phases.

Things to consider as you choose your journal, or build your own:

  • Journal size, 5×7 or larger? I'd say give yourself plenty of space, so go as big as you're able to afford, but also manage.
  • # of pages in journal – Most journals range from 30-150+ pages. It all depends on the purpose of your journal, and how often you want to change styles.
  • Paper quality and type – Some paper can withstand lots of ink and moisture, others not so much. Keep that in mind as you pick your paper, do you want to paint also? Then pick mixed-media paper for your journal.
  • Pages, are they blank or dotted/lined? Either works, it all depends on your preference. I've used both and can see how dotted can help with keeping things all lined up. I also love plain paper as that allows me to draw and mark up the pages as I wish.
  • Ability to close the journal with a strap or rubber band.

This is my current collection of journals devoted to my astrological studies, practices, and tracking.

Here's a quick list of journals I currently use for my astrology tracking and studies, or have used in the past for art, journaling, and day-to-day life planning.

  • Moleskine dotted journal — Moleskine has been a staple of mine, especially as I dug into the bullet journaling techniques. I love the dotted pages, a fave for structured drawing and writing.
  • LEUCHTTURM1917 dotted numbered pages journal — I've used these journals for years, I prefer them over Moleskine. For my purposes, I've used these journals for astrology course note-taking.
  • Ranger mixed-media journal – This brand is well-known in the junk journaling and mixed-media art supply world. This is perfect for those wanting a heavy-duty paper journal.
  • Strathmore 400 Series Sketch Pad – Another classic in the art world, use sketch paper as a versatile medium for your astrology journal setup.
  • Leda textbook journal – I'm currently using this journal and love it for its versatility and ability to close. The paper is outstanding and it's able to withstand paint, markers, and glue.
  • ARTISTO hardcover sketchbook – Another excellent option for starting your astrology journal with an art journaling + bujo flair.
  • Robrasim leather refillable journal – I actually haven't used this journal, but I'm looking at it for future purchases. It's got everything I want for a travel journal: a strap, different types of paper, a pocket, and a leather cover.
  • Oberon Design leather refillable journal – A perfect gift for those seeking a special item for their loved one, or for themselves. This is leather, refillable, and has a Sun design on the cover. Beautiful!

Other Journaling Supplies To Consider

Now that you have the key item for your astrology journaling and studying efforts settled, let's talk about what else you may need to make the most of your journal:

  1. Colored Pencils – I love Prismacolor pencils and use them all of the time for coloring and drawing.
  2. Colored Pens by Pilot, Precise, Extra Fine Point 0.5 mm – are perfect for writing and marking the structure of your pages.
  3. Colored markers – the world of markers continues to evolve, from watercolor to acrylic. The world is vast, which means more variety for you to choose from. I love my Farber-Castell Pitt brush pens in the multicolor pack. There are also Tombow markers and the pastel-colored Mildliners.
  4. Paint pens – this is where things get fun! There's the whole world of paint pens for watercolor and acrylic paint use. Check these out.
  5. Glue – this is another supply that has many options to choose from. I like UHU glue sticks and Elmer's spray adhesive for larger projects.
  6. Modge Podge – this magical substance can glue items and varnish your finished pages.
  7. Washi paper/tape – Use astrological and celestial-themed washi tape to decorate your pages.
  8. Scissors – It is always handy to have something to cut your magazines and other paper ephemera for your journal.
  9. Ruler – if you want to be precise when drawing boxes and lines, grab a ruler!
  10. Stickers – there are so many sticker options out there, you can do the washi as mentioned, or explore Creative Fabrica for fun astrology-themed sticker packs.
  11. Astrology-related images & objects – start gathering images and objects that remind you of the stars, the planets, the signs, etc – use these to embellish your pages or to become the centerpiece of a journal page.

Ok, now that we've got that covered, let's get into the meat of this guide!

Zodiac & Astrology Journal Ideas and Spreads

As an astrology newbie, you likely have many astrological studies questions and want a way to capture your thoughts in a manageable and trackable manner. Using a zodiac journal, or an astrology journal dedicated to your studies is a true commitment to yourself, and your desire to not only learn but apply this knowledge on a day-to-day basis.

Tip: Add astrology journaling techniques to help you manifest your dreams and align with the universe for the best results!

To help you do that, I've come up with 33 astrology journaling ideas and spreads for your journal. Whether you do a bullet journal or come up with your own style, all of these ideas can be used to help you build your astrological language and toolkit.

May these inspire you to learn astrology today, and keep learning as the stars continue to do their dance.

1. Astrology vocabulary builder

I can't tell you how many times I've searched and searched for a good astrology vocabulary book, or guide. I've tracked down some classical astrological books like Manly Hall's Astrological Keywords, and Demetra George's Astrology Workbook, but for the most part, most astrology books teach you without giving you a quick list of keywords to reference.

So, build one yourself!

📃 Create a dedicated section in your journal for building your astrology vocabulary. Each entry should include:

  1. The term (e.g., “Conjunction”)
  2. Its definition
  3. A simple diagram or symbol if applicable
  4. An example of how it's used in an astrological context
  5. Personal notes on how you understand or remember the term

Aim to add 2-3 new terms each week. Review your vocabulary regularly, and try to use these terms in your other astrology journal entries to reinforce your learning.

2. Zodiac sign studies (one sign per page/spread)

A key aspect of studying astrology is getting to know the Zodiac wheel, and learning each Zodiac sign's meaning.

To help you in that effort, here are 12 Zodiac Study Cards/Sheets for your learning and tracking efforts. The bundle includes 2 sizes for your cards: 8.5 x 11″ and 5 x 7″, and 2 pages detailing the zodiac and planet symbols.

Print out the pages and glue them onto your journal blank pages. You can also cut out the elements from each Zodiac card to better your page layout needs.

♊ If you're creating your own Zodiac study cards/spread, be sure to include for each sign:

  • Zodiac sign name
  • Element and modality
  • Zodiac season dates
  • Zodiac glyph/symbols
  • Keywords
  • Ruling planet name and symbol
  • Associated constellations, colors, stones, body parts, etc.
  • Compatibility
  • Balancing tips

Remember! To decorate your pages and embellish them to make them your own.

3. Astrological archetypes and their appearances in your life

Another great exercise for learning and studying astrology is to jot down the appearance of astrological archetypes in everyday life. Similar to a tarot card learning exercise in a tarot journal, this involves exploring the core astrological archetypes by observing the world around you and journaling about it.

To get started, create a spread for each major astrological archetype (e.g., The Hero, The Mother, The Trickster). For each archetype:

  1. Write a brief description of its characteristics and associated planets/signs
  2. Reflect on how this archetype manifests in your own life
  3. Note any significant events or people that embody this energy for you
  4. Sketch or paste images that represent this archetype to you
  5. Track instances when you notice this archetype's influence in your daily life

The core astrological archetypes include the Hero (self-realization), the Mother (nurturing), the Father (authority), the Child (innocence), the Maiden (purity), the Lover (passion), the King/Queen (leadership), the Wise One (wisdom), the Trickster (mischief), the Warrior (courage), the Healer (restoration), and the Creator (innovation). Each represents fundamental energies and patterns in human experience and consciousness.

Regularly revisit these pages to add new insights or experiences.

This practice will help you recognize astrological energies in your everyday life, deepening your understanding of how celestial archetypes play out in practical terms. It also encourages self-reflection and personal growth through an astrological lens.

4. Astronomical constellation sketches and myths

How fun would it be to explore the constellations via watercolor and marker sketches and drawings? And then add your findings to fill out your page? Fun, I say!

🌠 To get started, dedicate pages to each of the 12 zodiacal constellations. For each constellation:

  • Sketch the star pattern, marking major stars
  • Write a brief summary of the associated myth or folklore
  • Note its astrological significance and keywords
  • Include its celestial coordinates and best viewing times
  • If possible, paste a photo you've taken of the constellation

As you progress, try to observe and sketch constellations from direct observation.

One great thing about this fun journaling page layout is that it helps you find and recognize constellations. This strengthens your connection to the stars, which is key to astrological practice.

Fun learning FTW!

5. Planet and sign correspondence charts

This essential reference tool is a must-have for any astrology enthusiast.

🌃 Create a comprehensive chart that maps out the relationships between planets and signs:

  1. Draw a grid with planets on one axis and signs on the other
  2. Note the ruler of each sign
  3. Mark exaltations, falls, and detriments
  4. Color-code or use symbols for easy visual reference
  5. Add brief notes on how each planet is expressed in each sign

Take your time with this project – it's informative and can be a fun and creative exercise. Use colors, symbols, and your own artistic flair to make it visually appealing and memorable.

This chart serves as a quick reference guide, helping you internalize these fundamental astrological relationships. As you create it, you'll naturally memorize these crucial correspondences, enhancing your astrological practice.

6. Astrology symbol practice and sketches

This is one of the fun exercises I did long ago to help me learn the astronomical symbols and glyphs. Pull out your favorite pen for this astrology journal idea!

🎯Dedicate pages to practicing and perfecting your astrological glyph drawings:

  1. Create sections for planets, signs, aspects, and other symbols
  2. Practice drawing each symbol repeatedly
  3. Note the meaning and any memory aids next to each symbol
  4. Create artistic interpretations of symbols
  5. Use these symbols in your other astrological journal entries

Try out a few sessions practicing the symbols and soon enough you'll be reading and writing charts more fluently.

7. Astrological element and modality studies

Think of this as your astrological Lego set. By exploring elements and modalities, you're assembling the core building blocks of cosmic understanding.

Soon, you'll be constructing insightful interpretations with the ease of a master builder, seeing patterns and connections in the grand celestial architecture.

🔥 Set up spreads for each element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and modality (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable):

  1. List the signs associated with each element and modality
  2. Note the characteristics and qualities of each
  3. Reflect on how these energies manifest in your life
  4. Create visual representations (e.g., color schemes, abstract art)
  5. Track how transiting planets through these signs affect you

8. House system explanations and personal house placements

When you're starting your astrology studies, you'll need to determine what house system(s) resonate and become part of your practice. I use whole sign houses, and that's what I teach in my astrology courses.

🏠 To get familiar with the options, create a section in your journal dedicated to understanding the various house systems:

  1. List major house systems (Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal, Koch, etc.)
  2. Briefly explain the calculation method for each
  3. Draw simplified diagrams showing how house cusps differ in each system
  4. Note the strengths and potential issues of each system
  5. Apply different house systems to your own chart and compare the results

This exploration will help you grasp the nuances of house division and make informed choices about which system resonates with your practice.

9. Astrology-based affirmations for each sign

Doing affirmations for your astrology, specifically your Sun sign and challenging planets or aspects is a highly rewarding method to rewiring one's mindset.

Affirmations also help to learn the signs and planets that you're not familiar with, by giving you a personal experience of the energy when reading the affirmation.

📜To get started, create a dedicated space in your journal for astrological affirmations:

  1. Divide the section into 12 parts, one for each zodiac sign
  2. For each sign, write 3-5 positive affirmations that align with its energy
  3. Include the sign's element, modality, and ruling planet for context
  4. Add a small symbol or sketch representing each sign

Regularly reading and reflecting on these affirmations will deepen your understanding of each sign's gifts and challenges. It also provides a positive, growth-oriented approach to working with astrological energies.

You could also do new moon affirmations in addition to sign and planet based affirmations.

10. Personal natal chart drawing

Drawing your personal natal chart is a must for anyone studying astrology.

By drawing your chart by hand, you'll develop a more intimate understanding of your personal cosmic blueprint. This process encourages a meditative engagement with your chart, often revealing insights that might be missed when simply looking at a computer-generated version.

Dedicate a full spread to manually drawing your natal chart:

  1. Start with a large circle and divide it into 12 sections
  2. Mark the Ascendant and house cusps
  3. Plot the positions of planets, noting degrees and minutes
  4. Add aspect lines between planets
  5. Color-code elements, modalities, or other features for visual clarity

11. Aspect patterns in your chart and their meanings

Aspect patterns are the cosmic constellations within your birth chart, revealing intricate energy dynamics that shape your personality and life experiences.

This section will guide you through identifying and interpreting these celestial blueprints, unlocking deeper insights into your astrological makeup and potential life themes.

💹 Create an aspect patterns section:

  1. List major aspect patterns (Grand Trine, T-Square, Yod, etc.)
  2. Draw diagrams of each pattern
  3. Note the general interpretation and energy of each pattern
  4. Identify any aspect patterns in your natal chart
  5. Track transiting aspect patterns and their effects on your life

This study will enhance your ability to see the “big picture” in charts, moving beyond individual aspects to recognize larger energetic structures.

It's like learning to see constellations instead of just individual stars, providing a more holistic understanding of astrological influences.

12. Astrological book summaries and key takeaways

Are you a book nerd like me? I love reading as a method for learning, and love to share book ideas with others. Btw, did you see my list of favorite astrology books?

📚 For this journal idea, create a dedicated section in your journal for astrology book summaries:

  1. For each book, note the title, author, and publication date
  2. Write a brief overview of the book's main focus or thesis
  3. List 3-5 key concepts or insights you gained
  4. Note any techniques or interpretations unique to this author
  5. Reflect on how the book's content relates to your own chart or experiences
  6. Include quotes that resonated with you, with page numbers for easy reference

This practice helps consolidate your learning, creates a personalized reference library, and allows you to track your growing understanding of different astrological perspectives over time.

13. Notes from astrology courses or workshops

When I started my astrological studies at the Portland School of Astrology, I quickly bought two orange LEUCHTTURM1917 journals to keep track of my studies. (this is also when I went down the fountain pen rage…. 🤣)

🏛 As you start or deepen your astrological studies, dedicate a section of your journal to notes from formal learning experiences:

  1. Start each course or workshop with its title, instructor, and dates
  2. Create a mind map or outline of the main topics covered
  3. Write detailed notes, using symbols and diagrams where helpful
  4. Include any exercises or homework assignments given
  5. Reflect on your personal insights or “aha” moments
  6. Note any questions that arise for further research
  7. If possible, include handouts or printouts from the course

This organized approach helps you maximize the value of your educational investments, creates a resource for future reference, and allows you to track your progress in astrological studies over time.

14. Tarot and astrology connections

Tarot and astrology go hand in hand, both are excellent tools for understanding ourselves and the world around us.

This practice will help you create a more holistic divination practice, enriching your interpretations of both tarot and astrological symbols.

🃏 Create a section in your journal to explore the rich relationship between tarot and astrology:

  1. Make a chart connecting tarot cards to astrological signs, planets, and houses
  2. For each Major Arcana card, note its astrological correspondences
  3. Explore how the four suits relate to the four elements
  4. Practice interpreting tarot spreads with an astrological lens
  5. Compare your daily tarot draw with the current astrological transits
  6. Reflect on how combining these systems deepens your understanding of both tools

15. Personal horoscope interpretations and accuracy tracking

Get ready to track your personal horoscope and get more intimate with your natal chart.

This practice sharpens your critical thinking skills and helps you discern which astrological factors resonate most strongly in your life.

Over time, you'll develop a more nuanced understanding of how general horoscopes apply to your specific chart and circumstances, potentially leading to more accurate personal interpretations.

☀ Dedicate regular journal entries to tracking and analyzing horoscope predictions:

  1. Record daily, weekly, or monthly horoscopes from various sources
  2. Note your initial reactions and expectations
  3. Throughout the period, jot down events or feelings that seem relevant
  4. At the end of each period, reflect on the accuracy of the predictions
  5. Analyze patterns in what tends to be accurate or inaccurate for you

16. Daily astrological forecasts and reflections

Now as you go further down the list, you'll notice the astrology journal ideas become more complex requiring a little bit more from you.

Don't worry though, this daily journaling practice will sharpen your astrological interpretation skills, help you understand how transits affect you personally, and create a valuable record of your astrological journey.

It's like keeping a weather journal but for the cosmic climate!

Here's what you need for your pages:

  1. Note the day's date and current moon phase
  2. List major planetary aspects for the day
  3. Write a brief interpretation of how these might affect you, based on your natal chart
  4. Throughout the day, jot down events, moods, or experiences that seem significant
  5. In the evening, reflect on how the day's events aligned with your morning forecast
  6. Over time, look for patterns in how certain transits tend to affect you

17. Moon phase tracker and observations

Tracking the moon's phases and transit through the zodiac wheel is another great practice to help you understand the dynamics of your birth chart.

This practice also attunes you to lunar rhythms and helps you plan activities in harmony with cosmic energies.

Note: You can also use the moon phases for manifesting your goals and desires. That's another way to use your journal!

🌑 To create a monthly lunar calendar in your journal, you need to:

  1. Draw a circular diagram divided into 8 sections for each lunar phase
  2. Mark the dates of New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter
  3. Note the zodiac sign the Moon is in each day
  4. Track your mood, energy levels, and significant events
  5. Reflect on how the lunar phases correlate with your experiences
  6. Over time, identify patterns in how the Moon's cycle affects you personally

18. Planetary movements and their effects

Tracking planetary movements is a major component of astrological practice. To truly comprehend how planetary energies manifest within yourself and your environment, consistent observation and interpretation are key.

Building your astrological toolkit requires a multifaceted approach: reading, listening, watching, experimenting, and creating. Engage with these energies through various forms of expression to internalize the essence of each planetary archetype.

So, the purpose of this section is to help you understand planetary energies and how they influence your daily life and long-term cycles.

🌍 To track the movements of planets, dedicate several pages to:

  1. Create a table with columns for each planet and rows for dates
  2. Note when planets change signs or houses in your natal chart
  3. Record major aspects formed between transiting planets
  4. Observe and journal about how these transits manifest in your life
  5. Pay special attention to your ruling planet(s) and personal sensitive points

19. Retrograde periods and how they affect you

Everyone is scared about retrogrades, heck, there are thousands of memes at this point screaming about the next retrograde planet. Here's a hint, we have retrograde planets every single year. Surprise! Mercury is retrograde 3-4 times a year!

📅 So, let's get used to retrogrades and build a healthy relationship with this astrological transit by creating a retrograde calendar and section in your journal:

  1. Mark the start and end dates of each planet's retrograde periods
  2. Note which house and sign each retrograde occurs in your chart
  3. List areas of life and themes associated with each retrograde
  4. During retrogrades, journal about challenges, revelations, and growth
  5. After each retrograde, summarize lessons learned and changes made

20. Solar and lunar eclipse notes and experiences

Eclipses are quite the natural phenomenon we get to experience on planet Earth, and as fascinating as they are to witness in person, the astrology behind eclipses is equally captivating. Astrologically, eclipses are seen as powerful events that can bring significant change and transformation.

Eclipses often symbolize endings and new beginnings, revealing hidden truths and prompting you to reassess and realign your path.

🌞 Keeping track of eclipses allows you to tap into these powerful cosmic events for personal growth and change. For this spread, create dedicated pages for each eclipse:

  1. Record the date, time, and zodiac position of the eclipse
  2. Note whether it's a solar or lunar eclipse and its series (Saros cycle)
  3. Identify which house it falls in your natal chart and any aspects it makes
  4. Before the eclipse, write your intentions or areas you hope to gain clarity on
  5. During the eclipse window (2 weeks before and after), record significant events, dreams, and insights
  6. Six months later, revisit your eclipse notes to observe how its themes have unfolded

21. Astrological event calendar (conjunctions, oppositions, etc.)

Now you're going to create your personal ephemeris but in a nicer format. What you'll be doing is creating a yearly or monthly spread for major astrological events

📆 This calendar gives you a bird's-eye view of cosmic patterns, helping you plan and prepare for upcoming astrological weather:

  1. Mark dates of New/Full Moons and their signs
  2. Note ingresses (planets changing signs)
  3. Highlight retrograde periods
  4. Include dates of major aspects (conjunctions, oppositions, etc.)
  5. Mark eclipse dates and zodiac positions
  6. Add personal transits significant to your chart

For the latest planetary dates and times, go to astro.com and generate a free ephemeris in PDF format. Print out the pages you need for your astrological calendar spread.

Or if you have an astrology app, like Time Nomad, look up the transits on your app and jot them down into your journal.

22. Astrological Year Ahead predictions and reflections

Having a year in review is one of my faves ways to do a journal, especially when it includes my astrology like a solar return chart.

This practice helps you work consciously with upcoming energies and track your personal growth through astrological cycles.

⚡ To help you forecast your personal astrological year, dedicate a section to:

  1. Note major transits to your natal chart
  2. Identify themes for each month based on transiting planets in your houses
  3. Mark your solar return date and create a solar return chart
  4. Set intentions and goals aligned with the year's astrological themes
  5. Revisit and reflect on your predictions throughout the year

23. Transits log and personal experiences

Now you're getting deeper into your astrology transit studies by creating a planetry transits log. This log helps you understand how transits manifest in your life, improving your predictive skills and self-awareness.

📉 To create a running log of significant transits and their effects be sure to include:

  1. Note the date, transiting planet, aspect, and natal planet involved
  2. Describe events, feelings, or circumstances you associate with the transit
  3. Record the duration of the transit's influence
  4. Reflect on lessons learned or changes prompted by each transit
  5. Look for patterns in how certain transits tend to affect you

24. Planetary hour tracker and observations

Did you know that each day and hour is ruled by a planet and that you can use that knowledge to build impactful rituals and manifestation practices? Truth. For example, Saturday is ruled by Saturn.

Use this practice to help you synchronize your activities with cosmic rhythms for potentially better outcomes.

To do this, set up a system to track and use planetary hours:

  1. Create a reference chart of planetary hour rulers for each day
  2. Note activities best suited for each planetary hour
  3. Plan important tasks or events according to supportive planetary hours
  4. Record outcomes of activities performed during specific planetary hours
  5. Reflect on how aligning with planetary hours affects your daily life

25. Birth chart drawings (your own and others')

Now that you feel comfortable drawing your own chart, why not do it again, and practice with others' charts too?

The act of drawing charts by hand deepens your understanding of astrological symbolism and chart structure while creating a personal gallery of important charts in your life. Who's chart do you want in your journal? Lover? Parent? Your Pet?

🖌 I know you want to do this, so be sure to dedicate pages to drawing birth charts:

  1. Start with your own natal chart, drawn by hand
  2. Add charts of family members, friends, or significant others
  3. For each chart, note key features like stelliums, aspects patterns, or empty houses
  4. Color-code elements, modalities, or other features for visual clarity
  5. Write brief interpretations next to significant features

26. Synastry studies with friends/family/partners

Down the rabbit hole, we continue! One of the biggest questions people ask is how can I use astrology to find my perfect “X”?

Well, I think the first step in this grand adventure is to deepen your understanding of relationship dynamics through an astrological lens. Once you start learning more about synastry charts, and the world of astrological compatibility, you will see how complex it can be to find the perfect “X”.

💘Are you ready? Ok, so dedicate a section for relationship astrology studies:

  1. Draw overlapping charts for you and your significant others
  2. Note major inter-chart aspects and house overlays
  3. Analyze the compatibility of elements and modalities
  4. Track composite chart patterns and progressions
  5. Reflect on how astrological synastry manifests in your relationships

27. Mercury retrograde experiences and lessons

Remember those archetypes in journal idea #3? Here's where you can tie in those pages with the exploration of Mercury, and how to navigate Mercury retrograde more consciously and productively.

🦊 For each Mercury retrograde period, be sure to dedicate some space to:

  1. Note the dates and zodiac signs of the retrograde
  2. List areas of life likely to be affected (based on natal chart)
  3. Journal about communication issues, tech problems, and misunderstandings
  4. Record any insights, reunions, or revised plans during this time
  5. Reflect on lessons learned after each retrograde period

28. Venus and Mars cycle tracking for relationships

The fave duo of the astrology coach council, Venus and Mars. Even with the most challenging of natal aspects, you gotta appreciate their presence in our lives.

Each planet has its pros and cons, so why not attune to its relationship and energy rhythm?

🥰To celebrate and honor Venus and Mars cycles, leave a few pages for their dance:

  1. Mark dates when Venus and Mars change signs
  2. Note their positions relative to your natal chart
  3. Track how these cycles affect your relationships and motivation
  4. Pay special attention to Venus and Mars retrogrades
  5. Reflect on patterns in love life and personal drive aligned with these cycles

29. Jupiter return reflections and goals

Moving along to the next big player, Jupiter. Jupiter is known as the great benefic, here to help you honor your gifts and expand your horizons.

This planet is associated with growth, abundance, wisdom, and higher learning. When Jupiter's influence is strong in your chart, it encourages you to pursue your dreams, embrace new opportunities, and seek out knowledge and adventure.

Its energy is all about optimism and looking at the bigger picture, helping you to grow and flourish in all areas of your life.

💥 Tap into these critical life-cycle transits with a Jupiter spread, page or two:

  • Calculate and mark your Jupiter return dates (every 12 years), as well as squares (every 3 years) and trines (every 4 years) to your natal Jupiter
  • Set intentions and goals aligned with Jupiter's themes of expansion, growth, and opportunity for each significant transit
  • Journal about major life events, new opportunities, philosophical shifts, and areas of personal or professional expansion during these periods
  • Reflect on how your beliefs, worldview, and sense of abundance have evolved
  • Compare your experiences to traditional interpretations of Jupiter returns and aspects, noting any patterns or unique manifestations in your life

30. Saturn return preparation or processing

When I first began studying astrology, all I kept hearing about was how hard Saturn could be in life. Like this evil demon was coming to get you.

Saturn is meant to be the opposite of Jupiter. Its purpose is to help you bring your dreams to fruition. He's the reality check patrol leader.

😎 Wanna harness its wisdom? Cool, then dedicate sections to these significant life transits:

  1. Calculate and mark your Saturn return dates (approximately every 29.5 years), as well as squares (every 7 years) and oppositions (around age 14-15 and 44-45) to your natal Saturn
  2. Set intentions and goals related to Saturn's themes of responsibility, structure, and long-term achievement for each significant transit
  3. Journal about major life events, challenges overcome, lessons learned, and areas of increased maturity or authority during these periods
  4. Reflect on how your approach to discipline, time management, and life structures has evolved
  5. Compare your experiences to traditional interpretations of Saturn returns and aspects, noting how they've manifested in your personal and professional life

31. North and South Node meaning in your chart

Rahu and Ketu, the North and South nodes of the moon, have much to offer you in your quest to understand your soul's journey in this lifetime.

The North node is your dharma, the soul work you're meant to do in this lifetime, and your South node is your karma, the soul's gifts in this lifetime that should support you not envelop you.

To help you understand these two natal chart points, create a spread for Nodal analysis:

  1. Note your North and South Node positions by sign and house
  2. List key themes and lessons associated with your Nodal axis
  3. Track transits to your Nodes and related life events
  4. Reflect on how you're balancing past (South Node) and future (North Node) energies
  5. Set intentions for personal growth aligned with your North Node

32. Asteroid studies (Chiron, Juno, Vesta, etc.)

Asteroids are getting more attention in astrology these days, as astrologers study and interpret the major transits.

A key book in that world is Demetra George's Asteroid Goddess book, an absolute necessity for studying the asteroid goddesses. And look to Melaine Reinhart's Chiron book for an in-depth study of this healer archetype.

🌇 To get familiar with these energies in your birth chart, dedicate pages to exploring your Chiron and the Asteroid Goddesses' natal placements:

  1. Research and note the positions of key asteroids (Chiron, Juno, Vesta, Pallas, etc. in your chart
  2. Identify significant asteroids conjunct your planets or angles
  3. Learn myths associated with these bodies and reflect on their themes in your life
  4. Track transits of asteroids and their effects

As you deepen your astrology studies, you will naturally begin to integrate the ancient wisdom of each natal chart aspect, including what the asteroids have to share with you.

33. Fixed star studies and their astrological significance

Yay! You have reached the end of my list of astrology journal ideas. Ready for the last one? Ok, for this one you will set up a section dedicated to exploring minor celestial bodies, such as the Fixed Stars.

Note: I would leave this practice to the very end, hence why it's listed last. Why? Well, because having a strong grasp on the basics can really help you dig deeper into other parts of your chart. Don't skip that.

💫 Now, for those ready for the challenge look up some Fixed Stars, and devote a few pages to these celestial bodies in your birth chart:

  1. Research and note the positions of key fixed stars in your chart
  2. Identify significant fixed stars conjunct your planets or angles
  3. Learn myths associated with these bodies and reflect on their themes in your life
  4. Track transits of asteroids and their effects

Fixed Stars to look up for your chart: Aldebaran (in Taurus), Algol (in Perseus/Taurus), Antares (in Scorpio), Betelgeuse (in Orion/Gemini), Castor (in Gemini), Pollux (in Gemini) Regulus (in Leo), Spica (in Virgo), Sirius (in Canis Major/Cancer), Vega (in Lyra/Capricorn), Fomalhaut (in Piscis Austrinus/Pisces).

Over time, try to integrate asteroid and fixed star wisdom into your general chart interpretation for yourself and others.

How To Use Your Astrology Journal

The beauty of creating and maintaining your own astrology journal is the ability to use it as you wish and need. You get to decide what is necessary to journal about, and what information you wish to track.

But even so, it's nice to have a quick reference list of how you could use your journal beyond the spreads mentioned above, as you'll want to write down your thoughts in a longer format and not be limited to a page dedicated to tables, images, and graphs, etc.

Things To Journal About:

Setting Intentions with Astrology

Use the new moon and full moon cycles to set powerful intentions. New moons are perfect for new beginnings, while full moons are ideal for releasing and manifesting.

Incorporate manifestation exercises based on astrological events. For example, during a new moon in your sign, set goals that align with your higher purpose.

Gratitude Practices

Track your astrological wins in a gratitude log. Jot down good things that happen during key cosmic events like New Moons or your Solar Return. Over time, flip back through these entries to see your progress and spot patterns in your personal growth.

Use astrology to cultivate a mindset of abundance by acknowledging the positive influences of planetary alignments in your life.

Dream Journaling with Astrology

Keep track of vivid dreams, especially during significant astrological events like eclipses or planetary transits.

Using a dream journal alongside your astrology journal can enrich your understanding of subconscious influences.

Monthly Astrology Themes

Each zodiac season brings its own energy. Dedicate a section to exploring the themes of each zodiac season. Reflect on how the energy of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc., influences your life.

Set specific goals for each season to harness its unique power and stay aligned with the cosmic flow.

Astrology journaling is an extremely helpful practice that can bring clarity, insight, and growth to your astrology studies. By exploring these journal ideas, you can deepen your connection with the cosmos and enrich your personal journey.

Whether tracking astrological events, setting intentions, or integrating tarot, your astrology journal can become a powerful tool for self-discovery, transformation, and mastering the astrological language.

Embrace the stars and let your journal be a guide through the celestial dance of life.
