How I Started Journaling with Astrology to Understand Myself Better

I used to journal like I was managing a small business …. habit trackers, color-coded goals, and to-do lists so efficient they practically had a KPI. It kept me organized, but I felt oddly detached from myself.

That’s how I started journaling with astrology, not from some mystical epiphany, but from a quiet sense that something was missing.

I was writing from the head, not the heart. Documenting tasks, not truths.

I’d been dabbling in moon phases and birth charts on the side, but hadn’t connected the dots… until one new moon, when I finally wrote about what I was actually feeling instead of what I’d done.

And just like that, everything changed.

Astrology turned my journal from a planner into a portal. A place to make sense of my emotions, track patterns, and reflect through a cosmic lens.

If you’ve ever felt like your journal is a glorified checklist, astrology might be the invitation your inner voice’s been waiting for.

Let me share my story with you, and perhaps inspire you to start your own astrology journaling practice.

My First Encounter with Astrology Journaling

I didn’t sit down one day and think, “Today I will blend the sacred language of the cosmos with my personal reflections.” Nope. It was messier and way more human than that.

In the early days, I was deep into bullet journaling — mostly tracking habits, moods, and progress. But I kept bumping into astrology in little ways: a YouTuber casually mentioning the moon’s influence, an Instagram post connecting Mercury transits to mental clarity, or lack thereof (hi, brain fog).

Then I came across a blog post that mentioned journaling during the full moon. It suggested reflecting on what you’re ready to release — not in a vague “let go of stress” kind of way, but really releasing. Emotionally. Energetically.

I gave it a try.

That night, under a moon that felt way too bright for sleep, I cracked open my journal and wrote not about what I had done that day, but about what I was feeling. What I was holding onto. What I was afraid to say out loud.

It felt like opening a window I didn’t know had been sealed shut.

And just like that, astrology stopped being something I studied from the outside. It became something I lived with … something that helped me reflect, process, and find language for what I was experiencing.

How I Started Journaling with Astrology: Tools & Rituals

When I first started weaving astrology into my journaling, I didn’t throw out my bullet journal or start burning palo santo on a Tuesday at dawn. I just… tweaked what I was already doing.

I was using a dot-grid Leuchtturm1917 (because of course I was), and I began carving out a tiny section on each weekly spread for moon phases and astro notes.

Nothing fancy…just a little “New Moon in Libra” scribbled in the margin or a note like “Mars square Saturn = cranky?” with a side-eye emoji.

Then came the rituals. Not capital-R Rituals with capes and chanting, just small, sacred-feeling habits.

Here’s what those early days looked like:

  • New Moon journaling: I’d light a candle (or honestly, just my laptop screen in the dark) and write intentions based on the moon sign and house it was hitting in my chart.
  • Full Moon releases: A page titled “Letting Go,” followed by a brain-dump of old narratives, fears, or just petty nonsense that needed to be cleared.
  • Transit notes: If I knew Venus was conjunct my sun or Saturn was squaring something spicy, I’d jot down how it showed up in my day.

My astrology journal prompts were simple at first:

  • How am I feeling in my body today?
  • What themes keep repeating this week?
  • What does this moon want me to know?

Some days it felt deep. Other days it was just, “I’m tired, and Mars is rude.” That counts, too.

What I Learned About Myself

Here’s the thing about journaling with astrology: it doesn’t let you ignore your own patterns.

I started to notice certain emotional themes looping back around like retrogrades on repeat. Every Libra moon? Sudden nostalgia and three-day crying sprees. (I have Sun in Cancer square my Moon in Libra, lots of feels each lunar return.)

When Mercury touched my 12th house? Dreams got weird, communication got weirder.

The more I tracked, the clearer it became: I wasn’t just reacting randomly to life. There were rhythms. Cosmic fingerprints. And underneath them, some really old stories I didn’t know I was still telling myself.

Some of the biggest things I’ve learned through astrology journaling:

  • My feelings have depth and cycles, and that’s not a flaw. They ebb and flow with Moon phases, seasons, and transits. I'm not “too emotional”, I’m just attuned to emotional undercurrents most people miss. (Still learning to trust that sensitivity as a strength.)
  • I notice patterns repeat when I resist growth… like withdrawing into solitude when the Moon moves through my 8th house, or hitting a wall of resistance every time Saturn activates my 4th house themes of safety and emotional roots.
  • My birth chart isn’t a box, it’s a living map. Journaling with it helps me navigate the deeper waters, especially when I lose direction. It reminds me where I've come from and what I'm here to heal.

Over time, my journal became less about what I was doing and more about who I was becoming. And honestly? That’s what made me keep showing up to the page.

How I Use Astrology in My Journaling Now

These days, my astrology journaling practice feels less like a system and more like a conversation, ongoing, flexible, and deeply intuitive.

Some weeks I write daily. Other times, I just check in during key transits or lunar phases. It’s not about me going for perfection; it’s about presence with myself and my personal growth.

Here’s how my current process looks:

  • I journal with the moon. New moons = intention setting. Full moons = emotional check-ins, releases, or sometimes just a playlist and a pouty cry. I’ll note what house the moon’s in for me and let that guide my focus.
  • I track transits. When something big is happening… like Jupiter entering a new sign or a personal planet touching my angles, I’ll jot down what’s showing up in my life. I’ll also write what I hope the energy helps me grow through. (Spoiler: it's rarely what I expect.)
  • I pay attention to patterns. If I feel super activated every time Venus enters my 10th house, or always find myself happy in seclusion during Aquarius season (true story), I make note. Those little patterns help me understand how I really operate, not just who I wish I were.

I also keep a loose “astro tracker” at the front of my journal: a simple table with dates, transits, and space for notes. Nothing fancy. Just enough to help me notice what connects.
