Why Astrology Journaling Works

You likely already journal in your life, or at least enough to know and understand the benefits of journaling for self-awareness, discovery and personal growth.

Journaling, for me, began with #bujo style journaling. Bullet Journaling is a method of personal organization developed by digital product designer Ryder Carroll.

It's super simple, and basic, and so versatile that you can use it to journal/track anything in your life. I used it to plan my year, track my goals month to month, create my wishlists, places I wanted to visit, things to read, affirmations, and the beginnings of my entry to all things woo + occult.

Journaling can also be quite artistic, such as maintaining and creating art journals for therapy and personal growth. Think blank pages where collage, paints, glues and your words come to life.

Astrology is the next spiritual practice that entered my life when I began my shift from muggle to mystic.

What is astrology for personal growth? Well, think of it this way, astrology is the study, tool and language that correlates planetary movement with human behavior and actions on Earth.

Astrology becomes a tool of self-awareness and personal growth as you unravel the meaning of your Sun, Moon and Rising Signs.

Inevitably, the next 10-100 questions spill out… what's my money story? how do I love? what's my life path?

When is that Uranus opposition, you speak of? And damn, how wild is that Saturn Return?

Astrology journaling works because you're now combining two practices that will:

  • expose your darkest secrets, and give you the medicine you need
  • allow you to track your ebbs and flows with known cycles, such as the Moon phases
  • help you to deepen your astrological learning journey
  • track your optimal times for expansion and building your ideal life
  • help to uncover your full birth chart's meaning and story
  • and so much more!

Astrology journaling can be as simple as answering a prompt, or intentionally working through a structured plan to learn your birth chart.

The options are endless, and you can start with these 33 astrology journaling ideas, my 30 day prompt pack, and the upcoming astrology journaling prompts for personal growth 👇

Self-Discovery through the Zodiac

The first thing to learn in astrology is the zodiac sign meanings. Start there to gain a solid foundation of core astrological knowledge.

  1. Which zodiac sign do you resonate with most and why?
  2. How do you see your Sun sign traits showing up in your daily life?
  3. In what ways do you express the shadow side of your Moon sign?
  4. What qualities of your Rising sign do others notice in you?
  5. Which zodiac elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) dominate your chart and how do they influence your personality?

Planetary Reflections

Next thing to explore in your birth chart is each planet's placement. There are 10 planets in astrology, just focus on a few for now.

  1. What does your Mercury sign say about how you communicate?
  2. How do you experience love and pleasure according to your Venus sign?
  3. In what areas do you express drive and motivation, as shown by your Mars sign?
  4. How has your Jupiter sign brought growth or luck into your life?
  5. What fears or life lessons have been shaped by your Saturn sign?

The Twelve Houses as Life Arenas

When you look at your birth chart, you'll notice the numbers 1-12 noted in the circle. That's basically your chart's 12 astrology houses, aka where things happen in your life.

  1. What area of life does your Sun occupy by house, and how do you express it?
  2. Which house holds your Moon, and how does it affect your emotional needs?
  3. Reflect on a recent event that relates to the themes of your 4th House.
  4. What is your relationship to creativity, based on your 5th House?
  5. What lessons have you learned from relationships shown in your 7th House?

Aspects and Planetary Dialogue

Next up is a bit more advanced beginner, so do explore the first 15 prompts before you dive into these.

These prompts help you to explore the astrology aspects meanings in your chart, aka the colored lines, and each one has a story to tell based on what planets are connected.

  1. Choose one major aspect (e.g., Sun square Saturn) in your chart, how do you experience it?
  2. Do you have any conjunctions? How do these planets amplify each other?
  3. Are there any oppositions in your chart? How do you balance the two sides?
  4. What planets form harmonious trines in your chart and how do they support you?
  5. Are there any challenging squares, and how have they pushed you to grow?

Finally we get to everyone's fave… the Moon. You really can't have an astrology journal without talking about Luna!

  4. How does your Moon placement influence your comfort zones?

How to Use These Astrology Journal Prompts

First thing you need is an astrology journal, or something you can use to write your astrology prompts and progress. Are you seeking a journal? Here's my review of the best astrology journals and how to choose one.

Once you have a dedicated journal or paper in hand, I recommend setting aside a short period of time each day and doing the following:

  • open your journal, and write down today's date and the transiting moon's sign
  • read/reflect on the astrology prompt you have chosen for that day; take your time to meditate OR just begin writing and don't let your “edit mind” get in the way
  • answer the prompt to your best ability and try to allow your natural intuition lead the way
  • do track synchronicities as the days go by, and notice any shifts within
  • decide to do daily journaling or track the larger astrological transits such as new moons

You really can't go wrong with astrology journaling, you just need to start and keep going 😉
